Most people have never heard of TSMC, yet almost every advanced device they own contains a chip it made. Founded in Taiwan in 1987 by Morris Chang, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company invented a business model that reshaped the entire industry: the pure-play foundry.
Design here, manufacture there
Building a modern chip factory — a "fab" — costs tens of billions of dollars and sits at the absolute frontier of engineering. Before TSMC, a company that wanted to sell chips generally had to build its own fab, an impossible barrier for a startup.
TSMC's insight was to split the two jobs. It would build the fabs and manufacture chips for anyone — while its customers focused purely on designing them. This created the "fabless" industry: companies like Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm and Apple design world-class processors and hand the blueprints to TSMC to actually produce. Without the foundry model, most of them could not exist.
The most important company you didn't know
By relentlessly investing in each new generation of manufacturing — measured in ever-smaller nanometres — TSMC pulled ahead of almost every competitor, and now makes the overwhelming majority of the world's most advanced chips, including the processors that train and run modern AI.
That has made a single company in a single country a genuine chokepoint for the global economy — and a central concern of trade policy, supply-chain planning and geopolitics. TSMC is the clearest proof that in the age of software, whoever can manufacture the silicon holds extraordinary power.
